1. Gave more descriptive names to a number of variables,
sometimes introducing additional names instead of reusing
existing names for multiple unrelated purposes.

2. Rewrote some of the permacrud-related code to
improve clarity.

3. Tweaked some debugging messages so that we wouldn't
try to format them with NULL pointers.
