the date command for the build stamp was being invoked over and over for each access of the 'variable'. I encountered this before and thought I had fixed it, so I'm kludging something together this time. You can still override the build id like so: make STAFF_CLIENT_BUILD_ID=''

re-arranged login params to take named params so one method can
accomodate barcodes, usernames and for better handling of the
